Guitar... the latest addition to my list of obsessions
Tom Pierce - Guitar

The latest addition to my long list of hobbies and obsessions takes on the age old addage "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". With no musical talent but a huge love for music, I've wanted to be able to play the guitar ever since I was a kid. Of course we all have played the "air guitar" to our favorite songs ever since we saw our first rock star jamming on stage, but I really wanted to do it for real. With no musical aptitude, and far too many hobbies already, I just never found the time to actually take it on.

One day some time ago I mentioned to my wife about my desire to play guitar and how I still had it on my "bucket list". Well, like most good wives, she actually listens to me, and when I opened my Christmas presents on December 25th, 2009 I found a brand new Yamaha acoustic guitar! Boy was I surprised... I had no idea. Well, she's called my bluff and now I have to put up or shut up. So, I signed up for lessons the following week and the rest is history. After just one week of tinkering around with my new toy, I fell in love with it and now practice about 10 hours a week religiously. I am sure to never miss my private lesson each week and diligently do my "homework".

Where to begin?

Training

Well, as I said, first thing to do was to go sign up for lessons, get me a book, and start practicing on my new acoustic guitar. So I went down and signed up to take lessons with Joe at "Guitar Guys" in Heath, Ohio. Joe hooked me up with the Mel Bay "Modern Guitar Method 1" book and started working through it each week.

Fortunately my decades in Martial Arts have taught me discipline in training and the value of sticking to a structured training program designed around building a sound foundation in basics.

So, I've been sticking to the program and moving along at a decent pace. While I really love my Yamaha F325 acoustic guitar, I knew that eventually I'd also want to add an electric guitar to my arsenal so that I could play a wider variety of songs and styles.

Getting electrified

Shecter Diamond Series

In March, 2010, I began heavily researching electric guitars and amps to try to educate myself on the subject before making my initial purchase. Joe, down at Guitar Guys, really was helpful in allowing me to try out a number of brands, styles and technologies so that I could actually get the "feel' and "sound" of each of my choices worked out in my mind.

Schecter GuitarsUltimately, Joe was able to save me a lot of money by selling me a used Schecter C-1 "Hellraiser" from their Diamond Series. I say used, but let me tell you, the thing is of showroom quality... it doesn't look like anyone ever picked it up before me. Shecter HellraiserIt sports a beautiful red quitlted maple finish, dual EMG active pickups, black chrome finish, beautiful pearl binding/trim around the body and headstock and pearl gothic cross inlay art on the fretboard.

Joe also sold me an awesome 75 watt Line 6 Spider IV amplifier and a LIne 6 FBV Express footpedal with 4 channel buttons and a volume/wah pedal. Lastly was to pick up a Profile 906 padded gig bag to carry my new axe in when I leave the house with it.

So, with both an acoustic and electric guitar, and all the primary gear I need to go with it, I'm all set to begin my journey to becoming at least a "decent" guitar player. Main thing is that I'm having fun whether I ever really get very good or not. Sometimes it's very, very frustrating and it seems I'm not making any progress.

But, my Karate students say the same thing to me after only a few months training. I always tell them... "I've been doing Martial Arts for 30 years, If you could do what I do after a few months of lessons, then I'd be the one that was frustrated... come back to me in a few years and you'll feel differently about what you can do.'

Get a grip
Picked up a couple cool guitar hangers that I found on Amazon.com the other day. They are "hands" that appear to be sticking out of the wall to hold your axe when you're not using it. They come in a wide variety of styles and colors. Mine are of a "silver metal" look/style.

Washburn Electric Acoustic and Fender Amp

After getting my first acoustic, then my first electric and amp, I finally decided it was time to take the next natural step and purchase an "electric-acoustic" guitar.

I spent a good deal of time researching before making my choice, click here to read about my selections for both guitar and amp.
